Volume 4, Issue 3 of Mantis Quarterly available now, Issue 4 coming soon First North American all Mantis meeting held April 23, 2005 On April 23, 2005 Mantis practitioners from the United States and Canada met together for the First North American Mantis Boxing Conference. The conference, held in conjunction with John Irvin’s Great Lakes Kung-Fu Championships, marks the first time in the West that practitioners from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Mainland Chinese lineages of Tanglang Quan have gathered for seminars, the exchange of techniques and an instructor’s colloquium. Students and instructors exhibited examples of their lines’ approaches to performing sets, and miniseminars were presented by Shifu Tony Puyot, an instructor of James Shyun’s Eight Step Mantis Boxing and Chiu Chi Man’s Hong Kong Seven Star Praying Mantis; Shifu John Scolaro, the Head Instructor in the United States for Master Shi Zheng Zhong’s Pong Lai Mantis Boxing; John Wicker, an instructor in Jon Funk’s Seven Star Mantis association; Master Hu Xilin Laoshi, a disciple of Master Ma Han Qing in both Taiji Meihua and Liuhe Tanglang Quan; Mike Biggie, a long-time practitioner of the Wong Hon-Fun lineage of Mantis; Jake Burroughs Laoshi, an American disciple of Master Hu Xilin; and Sifu Steve Cottrell, a practitioner of the Wong Hon-Fun lineage of Mantis. After the seminars, the instructors and senior students gathered for an instructor’s colloquium to discuss the traditional fighting rules for Mantis Boxing.
